Japan's Time To Shine: Revisiting The 1964 Tokyo Olympics by Patrick Hattman

Less than two decades following defeat in World War II, Tokyo was selected as the host city for the 1964 Summer Olympic Games. Despite the devastation wrought by many years of war and resulting damage to the national psyche, Japan was recovering rapidly as the 1960s opened. Putting on the Olympics for the rest of the world was just what the Japanese needed to finish the transformation back to peace and prosperity. In the run-up to the Olympics, the Japanese worked hard to organize the Games and to improve the city's infrastructure, including the shinkansen or "bullet train," which was readied for its debut.

The Tokyo Olympics were held in October that year to avoid the heat, humidity and monsoon rains of summer in the nation's capital. Changes in technology transformed how the Olympics were seen around the world as satellite coverage allowed for live broadcasts. This enabled many stars of the Games to quickly become household names globally, including some of Japan's best Olympians.

The Tokyo Olympics were the first Games staged in an Asian country, a source of considerable pride for Japan. As the host nation, Japan was able to choose a demonstration sport for the Games and picked judo, although only as a men's sport. However, volleyball made its debut as an Olympic team sport in Tokyo, and both men and women competed for medals.

The United States finished atop the medal standings with 36 golds, but the Soviet Union took the overall medal honors with 96. Japan took third place in the gold medal count with 16 - a total not equaled again by the country's athletes until 2004 - and won 29 medals in all.

In women's volleyball, Japan's national team thrilled the nation with a straight-sets victory over the Soviet Union in the gold medal match. In judo, Japan's squad made their countrymen proud by garnering three gold medals, although they were very surprised when Dutchman Anton Geesink bested his Japanese opponent for the fourth one. Other great Japanese athletes included gymnast Yukio Endo, who collected two individual golds and helped Japan to the men's team title, and freestyle wrestling gold medalist Osamu Watanabe, who also finished his career undefeated.

Japan had its chance to shine at the Summer Olympics Games in 1964 and did ever so brightly. Hopefully the same will happen in 2020, even if the Olympics have to be postponed until later in the year, because of the global crisis sparked by the coronavirus outbreak.

Whatfs App With You?

TOKYO NOTICE BOARD SEPTEMBER 04. 2020

Podcast Addict:

Podcast Addict is an excellent podcast app for podcast fans. It features almost every podcast you can think of. In addition, it has a simple and effective UI, plenty of organizational features, plenty of playback and download features, and a single-cost premium version. You can browse podcasts by category or search for them individually. Podcast Addict has Volume Boost, to make voices distinct from the background. It has Mono Audio, which takes the stereo channel and sandwiches them into mono in each ear. Some people have not-good hearing in one ear, so this could be a plus. While listening, of course, you can adjust the playback speed. You can also set download rules, create playlists easily, and it supports both Chromecast and SONOS along with Android Auto and Wear OS. The UI isnft the most elegant thing wefve seen. However, the app makes up for it by hitting literally every other box we could think of.

Microsoft SwiftKey:

Microsoft SwiftKey Keyboard is one of the most powerful and customizable third-party keyboards available. It hit the market several years ago with a predictive engine unlike anything any other keyboard had and the app has grown a lot of over the years. Itfs a free download and you can purchase themes for it if you want to. Other features include a dedicated number row, SwiftKey Flow which allows for gesture typing, multiple language support, cross-device syncing of your library and much more. Itfs about as good as it gets in the keyboard space.

Penguins Also Binge-Watch!

Pierre, an endangered Northern Rockhopper penguin hasn't been feeling tip top lately. The brave little guy swam across oceans and was found washed up on a beach in Western Australia. He has been spending some time in Perth Zoo's vet department, but staff at the zoo soon realised that being away from other penguins during this time was proving difficult for Pierre and he was rather lonely. So they came up with a brilliant way to lift his spirits while he was feeling under the weather - and it's a lot like how we would spend a sick day at home to be honest. Pierre has been watching documentaries about rockhopper penguins as well as episodes of Pingu. "Pierre's been enjoying watching them and seeing them in their little habitats at their zoo," the keeper reported.

Full Stops are Too Intimidating?!

A recent study claims that young people are intimidated by full stops used in social media communication as they're interpreted as a sign of anger. Teenagers and those in their early twenties who are known as Generation Z - because they've grown up with phones and technology - tend to send shorter messages with very little punctuation. So when full stops are used in text, younger people often perceive it to be passive aggressive, and a sign of irritation. If you send a text message without a full stop, itfs already obvious that youfve concluded the message. So if you add that additional marker for completion, they will read something into it and it tends to be a falling intonation or negative tone. A 2015 study from Binghamton University in New York found that texts ending with a full stop were perceived as insincere, whereas messages ending with exclamation points are considered more heartfelt.
